FAQs
WHAT IS A UNION?
A union is a legally recognized body with federally protected rights not afforded to individual workers. The most important right afforded to union workers is the right to collectively bargain with their employer. Employers are legally obligated to bargain in good faith with a union of workers and to sign any contract that the two sides agree upon. This is the legal framework that enables union workers to make improvements in the workplace.

We know that a unified and legally recognized voice is paramount to advocate for ourselves and our clients. Without a union, management has the full power to make unilateral decisions on pay, benefits, and all other working conditions without our input. With a union, we gain new legal rights and our workplace becomes more democratic. Union workers work together with their management to come up with the rules and systems that govern the workplace so that neither side is left out of the decision making process.
WHO RUNS THE UNION?
Members run their union and elect officials and stewards to represent them. At meetings, members vote on motions to determine how the union is run.
HOW DO WE FORM A UNION?
Traditionally, workers form unions by going through a union election process. When a majority of workers sign cards to show support for having a union election, a petition for an election will be filed with the federal government. In accordance with the Labor Code, a secret ballot election will be conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
