Why Organize?

Whether you love your job but want some security or are struggling and need change, organizing a union gives you the legal framework to have a real voice at work.
Organizing is not something that is done against your employer. It's a way to claim legal rights and protections not afforded to individual workers.
By forming unions, workers come together to gain the ability to advocate for themselves, without fear of retribution or reprisal.
The IAM believes our members are the heart and soul of the union. We believe that all workers deserve unions and that democracy should be the model inside the workplace and in the union itself. These are the guiding principles that drive our organization.
Why change jobs, when you can help change the issues at your current job. Improve your job, by having a say on wages and benefits, safety, job security, and working conditions.

KVCAP TRANSPORTATION SERVICES
"KVCAP drivers felt disregarded and poorly used by a remote, top down management system. Perpetual issues dragged down morale, but went unaddressed. When we reached out to IAM, they showed up in force to help us organize a vote to unionize. After the yes vote, IAM guided us through 19 negotiation meetings to produce our first contract. When an employee gets in trouble, he or she now has help from the union and a process for addressing issues. Before, you were on your own with pretty dim prospects. As we prepare for our contract renewal negotiations, I know the end result will be 99% better with the union at the table with us. Believe me, there is strength in numbers you will only appreciate after you take the step to organize."

LOBSTERMEN AND WOMEN
“I have watched our fisheries change so much since I was a child. Access to fisheries closed, regulations that cut us off at the knees instead of helping to conserve our industry. I was thrilled when I saw that the IAMAW was going to support an independent industry like ours. I would not be one lone voice, we would have a collective voice that would ring so much louder, and not be overlooked anymore! I often get the question- What can the union do for me? We as union members are so much stronger together. It does not take long to figure out. You’re not in it for what you can take away for yourself, it’s for all the things you want to make better for tomorrow. It is a solidarity with your union brother’s and sister’s all around the country willing to step up and help whenever needed. I am proud to be a member of local 207.”

TOWING AND RECOVERY ASSOCIATION OF MAINE
“As a member of the Towing & Recovery Association of Maine, I am proud to be partnering with the Machinists Union. Their support has been integral in our success with the Maine Legislature. They have provided invaluable guidance and assistance for introducing and assistance for introducing and amending current laws, improving safety, awareness and fairness for all Maine Towers.
